Established in 2020

Founded by Dr Pankaj Garg in November 2020 on joining the University of East Anglia and with support from the Wellcome Trust. The group has now grown to include studies of heart failure, haemodynamics, valve disease, arrhyhmia and coronary artery disease.

Our Goal

Improving the care of cardiovascular disease by utilising state-of-the-art cardiac imaging with a particular focus on cardiovascular physiological assessment, big data and artificial intelligence solutions to streamline analysis and improve precision medicine.

Dr Pankaj Garg MD, PhD
Clinical Lead of Imaging Sciences

Pankaj is Associate Professor in Cardiovascular Imaging at the University of East Anglia and is leading the development of advanced non-invasive invasive haemodynamic assessment at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals.

Dr Chris Sawh MD, PhD
Clinical Lead for Invasive Haemodynamics

Chris has a passion for invasive haemodynamic assessment and precision in coronary physiology. After training in advanced interventional coronary procedures at Sheffield, Chris gained experience in invasive cardiovascular haemodynamics assessment in Toronto, Canada. He specialises in right heart haemodynamic assessment and pressure-volume loop assessment at Norfolk and Norwich University Teaching Hospitals.

Dr Gareth Matthews PhD, MRCP
Clinical Lead for Electrophysiology

Gareth is an NIHR Clinical Lecturer in Electrophysiology at the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals. His current interest is in combining cutting edge cardiac MRI imaging and functional assessment with complex electroanatomical mapping techniques to improve the quality of atrial fibrillation ablation.

Chief Radiographer with special interest in cardiac MRI

David has substantial experience in cardiac imaging on several systems. He has led the development and optimisation work for 4D flow Imaging at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals. He also leads the MRI safety team to keep the MRI environment safe for patients, staff and everyone else. 

Dr Rui Li PhD
Research Associate

Rui is a Research Associate specialising in CMR analysis and data handling.
Kurian Thampi 
Research Radiographer with special interest in cardiac MRI 
Kurian has substantial experience in cardiac MRI and has A Diploma in Advanced Medical Imaging. He plays an important role in clinical translational studies, protocol development and optimisation for future studies at NNUH and UEA. He is currently Research Fellow at University of East Anglia. 

Mike Shemko
Head of Data Science, NNUH

Mike is Head of Data Science and Digital Transformation in Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. He is an expert in artificial intelligence application to healthcare systems.

Bahman Kasmai BSc, MA, MSc
Principal Clinical Scientist

Bahman is working in Radiology at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Trust. He has over 30 years of experience in developing clinical computer systems for research and clinical use. His current role includes quality assurance of digital systems, medical image processing and analysis, system administration of servers and in-house developed software applications. Bahman also has a special interest in the design and management of large-scale databases, from design and development to implementation.

Dr Hilmar Spohr FRCR, MSc
Consultant Radiologist
App development lead

Hilmar is a Radiologist with interest in chest, cardiac and neuro-imaging. 
He has an interest in visualising data and loves coding, electronic engineering, IOT and App development. 

He has developed the CMR Guide App for both Android and iOS in association with the BSCMR.

Dr Ciaran Grafton-Clarke MBChB
NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow

Ciaran is an NIHR Academic Clinical Fellow. His research interests include the use of big imaging databases to improve prognostication in valvular heart disease and heart failure.

Dr Zia Mehmood MD
PhD Candidate

Zia is a PhD candidate and interventional cardiologist. His research interests are in aortic flow profiles in aortic stenosis and valve replacement.

Dr Preethi Suresh MD
Interventional Registrar

Preethi is an interventional cardiology registrar with an interest in coronary flow and myocardial ischaemia.
